CROCHET PATTERN - Angie Hat

This beanie works up quickly & is perfect for warmer weather or bad hair days!

Materials 
I (5.5 mm) or J (6.0 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors

Yarn
Worsted Weight Yarn, approximately 100-120 yards of CA & 15 yards of CB
Sample shown using Caron Simply Soft Party.

Sizes
6-12 months, Toddler, Child and Adult 

Gauge
7 DC and 4 Rows = 2” (with I hook)

Stitch Guide
CA/CB - color A/color B, CH - chain, DC - double crochet, HDC - half double crochet,
SC - single crochet, SL ST - slip stitch, ST(S) - stitch(es), TR - triple crochet

Notes
  1. The beginning CH-1 does not count as a ST.  Join to top of 1st ST made.
  2. The CH-1 spaces in the body of the hat should line up vertically.


INSTRUCTIONS:

6-12 Months (17-18” head circumference)

Using I hook and CA, start with Magic Ring.
Round 1: CH 1 (not a ST), 13 DC in ring, join. [13 DC]
Round 2: CH 1, 2 DC in each DC around, join. [26 DC]
Round 3: CH 1, (DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join. [39 DC]
Round 4: CH 1, DC in next 3, (DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) around, join. [51 DC] 
Round 5: CH 1, (DC in next 2, CH 1, skip 1) around, join. [51 STS]
Round 6: CH 1, (DC in next 2, DC in CH-1 space) around, join. [51 DC]
Rounds 7-12: Repeat Rounds 5 and 6. Fasten off CA.
Round 13: With CB, join yarn at back seam, HDC in each DC around, join and fasten off. [51 HDC]

Toddler (18-19” head circumference)
Using I hook and CA, start with Magic Ring.
Round 1: CH 1 (not a ST), 12 DC in ring, join. [12 DC]
Round 2: CH 1, 2 DC in each DC around, join. [24 DC]
Round 3: CH 1, (DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join. [36 DC]
Round 4: CH 1, (DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) around, join. [48 DC]
Round 5: CH 1, (DC in next 7, 2 DC in next) around, join. [54 DC]
Round 6: CH 1, (DC in next 2, CH 1, skip 1) around, join. [54 STS]
Round 7: CH 1, (DC in next 2, DC in CH-1 space) around, join. [54 DC]
Rounds 8-11: Repeat Rounds 6 and 7.
Round 12: CH 1, Repeat Round 6.
Round 13: CH 1, (HDC in next 2, HDC in CH-1 space) around, join. Fasten off CA. [54 HDC]
Round 14: With CB, join yarn at back seam, HDC in each HDC around, join and fasten off. [54 HDC]

Child (19-21” head circumference)
Using I hook and CA, start with Magic Ring.
Round 1: CH 1 (not a ST), 12 DC in ring, join. [12 DC]
Round 2: CH 1, 2 DC in each DC around, join. [24 DC]
Round 3: CH 1, (DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join. [36 DC]
Round 4: CH 1, (DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) around, join. [48 DC]
Round 5: CH 1, (DC in next 3, 2 DC in next) around, join. [60 DC]
Round 6: CH 1, (DC in next 2, CH 1, skip 1) around, join. [60 STS]
Round 7: CH 1, (DC in next 2, DC in CH-1 space) around, join. [60 DC]
Rounds 8-13: Repeat Rounds 6 and 7. Fasten off CA.
Round 14: With CB, join yarn at back seam, HDC in each DC around, join and fasten off. [60 HDC] 

Adult (21-23” head circumference)
Using J hook and CA, start with Magic Ring.
Round 1: CH 1 (not a ST), 12 DC in ring, join. [12 DC]
Round 2: CH 1, 2 DC in each DC around, join. [24 DC]
Round 3: CH 1, (DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join. [36 DC]
Round 4: CH 1, (DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) around, join. [48 DC]
Round 5: CH 1, (DC in next 3, 2 DC in next) around, join. [60 DC]
Round 6: CH 1, (DC in next 2, CH 1, skip 1) around, join. [60 STS]
Round 7: CH 1, (DC in next 2, DC in CH-1 space) around, join. [60 DC]
Rounds 8-13: Repeat Rounds 6 and 7. Fasten off CA.
Round 14: With CB, join yarn at back seam, HDC in each DC around, join and fasten off. [60 HDC]
Work an additional round of HDC if needed for larger heads.

Flower (optional)
Using I hook and CA, start with Magic Ring. 
Round 1: CH 1 (not a ST), 12 DC in ring, join.
Round 2: CH 4, skip 1 ST, (SL ST in next ST, CH 4, skip next ST) unWl 6 CH-4 spaces are formed, SL ST to base of beginning CH-4 to join & fasten off CA.
Round 3: Using CB, and working in front of CH-4 spaces, join with a SC into an unused DC from Round 1, (HDC, DC, HDC, SC) in same DC, (SC, HDC, DC, HDC, SC) into each unused DC to form 6 petals, join to 1st SC, fasten off. 
Round 4: Re-join CB with a SC into an unused CH-4 space from Round 2, (HDC, DC, 2 TR, DC, HDC, SC) in same space, (SC, HDC, DC, 2 TR, DC, HDC, SC) into each CH-4 space around, join to 1st SC, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. 
Sew flower onto hat using yarn needle. 

Other Suggestions...

  • Other yarns that work well: Knit Picks Brava, Vanna’s Choice, I Love This Yarn, Red Heart With Love, Lion Brand Cotton
  • Use a fun variegated or self-striping yarn for a colorful hat.
  • Use cotton yarn for a cool spring hat.
  • Leave off the flower and add patches, clips, or a pom pom to your hat to make it unique.
