Finishing (trim & buttons)
Join yarn at the center back of hat.  SC evenly around hat, earflaps, and front panel.  When you reach the end of each earflap, CH (as many as you want), turn, SC (or HDC) in 2nd CH from hook and in each CH back to flap.  When you return to the 1st SC, join and fasten off.
If you prefer to have braided earflap ties, omit the long chains, then thread several strands of yarn through the tip of the earflaps and braid them.

Fold up the front panel.  Fasten it to the body of the hat by sewing a button through each top corner.
