CROCHET PATTERN - Beary Cute Beanie

This sweet and simple beanie is topped off with bear ears for extra cuteness! Whip one up for the entire family!

Materials
H/8 (5.0 mm) and I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hooks, yarn needle, scissors, stitch marker

Yarn
Approximately 150-200 yards of Worsted Weight Yarn
I recommend Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn or Lion Brand Vanna's Choice.

Sizes
0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, Toddler, Child, and Adult

Gauge
6 HDC and 5 Rounds = 2” with 5.5 mm hook

Very Easy

Stitch Guide
CH - chain, DC - double crochet, HDC - half double crochet, SC - single crochet, SL ST - slip stitch, ST(S) - stitch(es)

Notes
  1. The hat is worked in a continuous spiral.  Do not join at the end of each round.  Use a stitch marker to keep track.
  2. Edging options and instructions for bear ears and a bonus flower are on page 3.

0-3 Months  (14-15” head circumference)
Using I hook, start with Magic Ring.  
Round 1:  CH 1, 11 HDC in ring, do not join.  [11 HDC]
Round 2:  2 HDC in each ST around.  [22 HDC]
Round 3:  (1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around.  [33 HDC]
Round 4:  (1 HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in next) around.  [44 HDC]
Round 5-12:  HDC in each ST around.  
Round 13:  HDC in each ST around, SC in next 2, SL ST in next, do not fasten off yet.  See Below for edging options & bear ears.

3-6 Months  (15-17” head circumference)
Using I hook, start with Magic Ring.  
Round 1:  CH 1, 12 HDC in ring, do not join.  [12 HDC]
Round 2:  2 HDC in each ST around.  [24 HDC]
Round 3:  (1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around.  [36 HDC]
Round 4:  (1 HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in next) around.  [48 HDC]
Round 5-13:  HDC in each ST around.  
Round 14:  HDC in each ST around, SC in next 2, SL ST in next, do not fasten off yet.  See Below for edging options & bear ears.

6-12 Months  (17-19” head circumference)
Using I hook, start with Magic Ring.  
Round 1:  CH 1, 10 HDC in ring, do not join.  [10 HDC]
Round 2:  2 HDC in each ST around.  [20 HDC]
Round 3:  (1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around.  [30 HDC]
Round 4:  (1 HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in next) around.  [40 HDC]
Round 5:  (1 HDC in next 3, 2 HDC in next) around.  [50 HDC]
Round 6-14:  HDC in each ST around.
Round 15:  HDC in each ST around, SC in next 2, SL ST in next, do not fasten off yet.  See Below for edging options & bear ears.

Toddler  (18-20” head circumference)
Using I hook, start with Magic Ring.  
Round 1:  CH 1, 11 HDC in ring, do not join.  [11 HDC]
Round 2:  2 HDC in each ST around.  [22 HDC]
Round 3:  (1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around.  [33 HDC]
Round 4:  (1 HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in next) around.  [44 HDC]
Round 5:  (1 HDC in next 3, 2 HDC in next) around.  [55 HDC]
Round 6-15:  HDC in each ST around.

Child  (19-21” head circumference)
Using I hook, start with Magic Ring.  
Round 1:  CH 1, 12 HDC in ring, do not join.  [12 HDC]
Round 2:  2 HDC in each ST around.  [24 HDC]
Round 3:  (1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around.  [36 HDC]
Round 4:  (1 HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in next) around.  [48 HDC]
Round 5:  (1 HDC in next 3, 2 HDC in next) around.  [60 HDC]
Round 6-16:  HDC in each ST around.
Round 17:  HDC in each ST around, SC in next 2, SL ST in next, do not fasten off yet.  See Below for edging options & bear ears.

Adult  (21-23” head circumference)
Using I hook, start with Magic Ring.  
Round 1:  CH 1, 12 HDC in ring, do not join.  [12 HDC]
Round 2:  2 HDC in each ST around.  [24 HDC]
Round 3:  (1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around.  [36 HDC]
Round 4:  (1 HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in next) around.  [48 HDC]
Round 5:  (1 HDC in next 3, 2 HDC in next) around.  [60 HDC]
Round 6:  (1 HDC in next 14, 2 HDC in next) around.  [64 HDC]
Round 7-17:  HDC in each ST around.  *add additional rounds as needed for length
Round 18:  HDC in each ST around, SC in next 2, SL ST in next, do not fasten off yet.  See Below for edging options & bear ears.

Edging
Option 1:  Single Crochet
CH 1, SC in each ST around, join.  Repeat as many times as needed & fasten off.






Option 2:  Rope/Crab Stitch
CH 1, RSC (reverse single crochet) in each ST around, join & fasten off.






Option 3:  Shell/Scallop
CH 1, (skip 1 ST, 4 DC in next, skip 1 ST, SL ST in next) around, join & fasten off.





Bear Ears
Using H hook, start with Magic Ring.
Row 1:  CH 2, 10 DC in ring, CH 1, turn.  (12 DC for larger ears)
Row 2:  HDC in each DC across.  Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew ears near rounds 3 and 4 (or anywhere you prefer).

Other Suggestions...
  • Hold a strand of fun fur along with your yarn to make a fuzzy bear.
  • Crochet a flower to add to one ear.
  • Add stripes, or use variegated or self-striping yarns for a colorful bear.
  • Add ear flaps to make a warm hat for winter.
  • Omit ears for a great basic beanie.
