Stitch Guide
BL/FL - back loop/front loop, CH - chain, DC - double crochet, RS - right side, SC - single crochet, SL ST - slip stitch, ST - stitch

Notes
  • Use H hook for Toddler size. Use I hook for Child size. Use J hook for Adult size.
  • “Join with a SC” = Put yarn on hook, insert hook into desired ST, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.
Instructions:

Neck

CH 13.

Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each ST across, CH 1, turn. [12 SC]

Rows 2 - 64: SC in BL of each SC across, CH 1, turn. [12 SC]

After row 64, join the strip end-to-end and SL ST through both layers forming a circle, CH 1.

Now, turn the circle right-side-out (seam on the inside). Mark RS.

Round 65: SC into the end of each row around, join to first SC, fasten off. [64 SC]

Hood

Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn with a SC in FL 26 STS to the left of the back seam, SC in FL of next 11 STS, SC in BOTH loops of next 52 STS (you should be back to the beginning of the round now), SC in BL of next 12 STS (behind the first 12 made), CH 1, turn. [12 FL + 52 + 12 BL = 76 SC] See Pic below.

Row 2: (SC in next, DC in next) across, CH 1, turn. [76 STS]

Repeat Row 2 until the entire height of the hood (INCLUDING the neck portion) measures 12 1/2 - 13” for Toddler Size, 14 - 15” for Child Size, or 16 - 17” for Adult Size.

When your hood has reached the appropriate height, turn the hood inside out (wrong side facing), join the corners end-to-end and SL ST through both sides to sew the top of the hood closed. Fasten off, weave in all ends, and turn it right-side-out again.

Slip hood over head and fold the front back to frame the face.

Other Suggestions...
  • Other yarns that will work well: Caron Simply Soft, Cascade 220, Vickie Howell Sheep(ish), Malabrigo Worsted, Red Heart Soft
  • Try variegated or self-striping yarns for a fun, colorful hood.
  • Work the neck and hood in 2 different colors.
  • Work one round of SC around the face opening with fun fur or other textured yarn.
  • Embellish with a flower, bow, ribbon, brooch, buttons, or scarf pin.
  • Sew the fold in place with a few stitches.
  • Add a small pom pom to the tip of the hood.
