CROCHET PATTERN - Grandma Mae's Mug Cozy

This coffee mug cozy protects your hands & all surfaces from heat and moisture with its built-in coaster. It works up fast & makes a great gift!

Materials
H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, button

Yarn
Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn

Size
Fits MOST standard 10-11 oz coffee mugs.
Bottom diameter = 3.25 in/8 cm.
Height = 3.5 in/9 cm.


Difficulty

Stitch Guide
BL – back loop, CH – chain, DC – double crochet, MC/CA - main color/color A, SC – single crochet, SL ST – slip stitch, ST – stitch

Notes
  • Gauge is not listed. Make sure your circle measures 3.25 inches after Round 3, and the height of the cozy fits your mug.
  • The CH-1 or CH-2 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch. Join to top of 1st ST made.
  • This cozy works best on mugs that have handles centered on the side of the mug.
  • Please do NOT put cozy into microwave. Acrylic/synthetic yarns and/or buttons may melt or warp.


Instructions:

With MC, start with magic ring.
Round 1:  CH 2, 12 DC in loop, join.  [12 DC]
Round 2:  CH 2, 2 DC in each DC around, join.  [24 DC]
Round 3:  CH 2, (1 DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join.  [36 DC]  
*Circle should be same size as bottom of mug.  Approx. 3.25 in/8 cm.
You will now begin working in rows.
Row 4:  CH 1, (SC in BL of next ST, DC in BL of next) around to last 2 STS.  Leave last 2 STS unworked, CH 1, turn.  [34 STS]
Row 5:  (SC in next ST, DC in next ST) across, CH 1, turn.  [34 STS]
Rows 6–13:  Repeat Row 5.  
*Cozy should now measure approx. 3.5 in/9 cm tall.
Change to CA.
Round 14 (trim):  SC in next 33 STS, work 3 SC in corner ST, and SC evenly around handle hole (one SC per row down the right side, in the BL of the 2 unworked STS from Round 4, and up the left side), CH 13 (button loop made), and join with a SL ST into 1st SC.  Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Sew button to opposite corner from the button loop.  Set mug inside cozy and fasten loop onto button over top of mug handle.

Other Suggestions
  • Try solid, variegated or self-striping yarns.
  • To make a larger cozy, make sure Round 3 is the same size as the bottom of the mug and repeat Row 5 as needed.
  • Add a crocheted flower, ribbon, patch, or other embellishment to your cozy to make it unique.

CROCHET PATTERN - Mug Hug and Rug

This coffee mug cozy protects your hands from the hot mug, and the matching coaster protects all surfaces from scratches, heat and moisture.

Materials
H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors

Yarn
Approximately 1 oz Worsted Weight Cotton
Sample shown using Lily Sugar and Cream.

Fits MOST standard 10 oz coffee mugs.

Gauge
4 STS = 1”

Stitch Guide
CH - chain, Group ST - SC and HDC in same ST, HDC - half double crochet, SC - single crochet, SL ST - slip stitch, ST - stitch

 Notes
  • A small “space” is made between group stitches.  Those spaces are where your next row of group stitches will go.
  • It’s best for the cozy to be snug.  Once the mug hug gets warm from the hot mug, it will stretch.
  • This cozy works best on mugs that have handles centered on the side of the mug.
  • Please do NOT put cozy into microwave.  Acrylic/synthetic yarns may melt or warp.  Put mug hug on cup BEFORE filling it with hot beverages.

Mug Hug  (approx. 3.5” tall)
CH 34, join with SC to back ridge of 1st CH, careful not to twist the CH.
Round 1:  (mark as right side) Continue to SC in the back ridge of each CH around, join with SL ST to 1st SC.  [34 SC]
Row 2:  CH 1, SC and HDC in 2nd ST from hook (Group ST made), skip next ST, *Group ST in next ST, skip next ST; repeat from * across to last 2 STS, SC in last ST.  Do not join.  CH 1, turn.  [16 Groups + 1 SC]
Row 3 - 9:  Work Group ST in 1st SC and in each SC across to last ST, SC in last ST, CH 1, turn.  [16 Groups + 1 SC]
Round 10:  Work Group ST in 1st SC and in each SC across to last ST, JOIN with SL ST to 1st SC, CH 1, do not turn.  [16 Groups + 1 SC]
Round 11:  SC in each ST around, join.  Fasten off & weave in ends.  [34 SC]
Place coffee mug on sturdy surface, slip handle hole down around handle, guide mug hug into place over/around mug.

Mug Rug   (approx. 4” square)
CH 17 loosely.
Row 1:  SC in the back ridge of 2nd CH from hook and in back ridge of each CH across, CH 1, turn.  [16 SC]
Row 2:  SC and HDC in 2nd ST from hook (Group ST made), skip next ST, *Group ST in next ST, skip next ST; repeat from * across to last 2 STS, SC in last ST, CH 1, turn.  [7 Groups + 1 SC]
Row 3 - 12:  Work Group ST in 1st SC and in each SC across to last ST, SC in last ST, CH 1, turn.  [7 Groups + 1 SC]
Row 13:  SC in each ST across.  Fasten off & weave in ends.  [16 SC]

Other Suggestions

  • Try solid, variegated or self-striping yarns.
  • Work each HDC as a DC for a slightly thicker texture.
  • Work the “rug” using 2 strands of yarn for a super thick coaster.

CROCHET PATTERN - Virgo Mug Cozy

Materials
H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors, ¾ - 1” button

Yarn
Red Heart Creme de la Creme worsted weight cotton: 1 ball #205 Golden Yellow and 10 yds #101 Cream

Size
Fits MOST standard 10-11 oz coffee mugs.
Bottom diameter = 3.25 in/8 cm. Height = 3.5 in/9 cm.


Gauge
7 STS and 5 Rows = 2” in pattern stitch

Stitch Guide

Notes

Special Stitches
First Star = CH 1, draw up a loop in BL of 1st ST and in BL of next 2 STS. Yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
Star Stitch (Stars) = CH 1, draw up a loop in the CH-1 just made, draw up a loop in BL of the ST immediately below (the same ST as the last loop of the previous star), draw up a loop in BL of next 2 STS.  Yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.



Instructions:

With MC, start with magic ring.
Round 1:  CH 2, 12 DC in loop, join to 1st DC.  [12 DC]
Round 2:  CH 2, 2 DC in each DC around, join to 1st DC.  [24 DC]
Round 3:  CH 2, (1 DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join to 1st DC.  [36 DC]  
*Circle should be same diameter as bottom of mug.  Approx. 3.25 in/8 cm.
You will now begin working in rows.
Row 4:  (work in BL only) CH 1, make First Star, make 15 Stars, CH 1, SC in next, leave last 2 STS unworked, turn.  [16 Stars + 1 SC]
Row 5:  CH 1, HDC in SC, 2 HDC in each CH-1 space across, HDC into side of First Star (see pic), turn.  [34 HDC]
Row 6:  (work in BL only) CH 1, make First Star, make 15 Stars, CH 1, SC in both loops of last HDC, turn.  [16 Stars + 1 SC]
Rows 7–10:  Repeat Rows 5 and 6 twice.
Row 11:  CH 1, HDC in SC, 2 HDC in each CH-1 space across, HDC into side of First Star.  Fasten off MC and turn.
Change to CA. 
Round 12 (trim):  Join CA with a SC in the BL of last HDC worked, SC in BL of remaining 33 STS, CH 13 (button loop made), SC in same ST, work 2 SC down into end of each Star row, SC in BL of 2 unworked STS from Row 4, work 2 SC up into end of each Star row, SC in same ST as join, fasten off.
Sew button to opposite corner from the button loop.  
Set mug inside cozy, give it a little stretch to shape it into place, and fasten loop onto button over top of mug handle.

Other Suggestions
  • Try solid, variegated or self-striping yarns.
  • To make a larger cozy, make sure Round 3 is the same size as the bottom of the mug and repeat Rows 5 and 6 as needed.
  • Add a crocheted flower, ribbon, patch, or other embellishment to your cozy to make it unique.
  • Crochet every 2 rows using a different color.  Use up your scraps!

CROCHET PATTERN - Carousel Coffee Cozy

These coffee cozies are perfect for to-go cups from your favorite coffee shop! They work well on icy cold pint glasses and pints of ice cream, too!

Materials
G/6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors

Yarn
4 small amounts of worsted weight cotton
Samples shown using “Lily Sugar N Cream”.

Size
One Size fits most to-go cups, travel mugs, and pint glasses.
Finished size = 4.75” wide x 3.5” tall

Gauge
7 SC and 8 Rows = 2”

Difficulty
Easy

Stitch Guide  
MC - Main Color, CA/CB/CC - Color A/Color B/Color C, CH - chain, SC - single crochet, SK - skip, SL ST - slip stitch, ST - stitch

Special Stitch
LSC - long SC (spike) = SC over the CH-1 space into the ST of the previous round

Notes
  1. Cozy is worked from the top down.
  2. To help hide the seam, change colors at the CH-1 of each round.
  3. Do not cut the yarn at each color change. Instead, carry the unused yarns inside the cozy and fasten off at the end.
  4. Crochet snugly.  The warmth and moisture of the coffee cup will make the cozy expand.

Instructions:

With MC, CH 34.  Join to form circle, careful not to twist.

Other Suggestions
  • Other yarns that will work well:  Lion Brand Cotton, Red Heart Creme de la Creme, Bernat Handicrafter
  • If possible, I recommend putting the cozy onto the cup before filling it, just to be safe.  
  • Cotton cozies are microwave-safe.  Do not microwave acrylic cozies, or a cozy embellished with buttons, etc.
  • Use a different color for each of the color change rounds.  Use up all those scraps!
  • If you want your cozy to be a little taller, work an additional round of SC at Round 2 and Round 15.
  • Embellish your cozy with buttons, patches, or appliqu├ęs to make it unique!

CROCHET PATTERN - Bella Hood

This hood functions as a hood and a scarf. Slip it over your head, tuck the cowl part into your coat & stay toasty warm!

Materials
H (5.0 mm), I (5.5 mm) or J (6.0 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, stitch marker, scissors

Yarn
300 yards of light worsted yarn
Sample shown using Red Heart Shimmer.

Sizes
Toddler, Child and Adult

Gauge
8 SC and 7 Rows = 2” with I (5.5 mm) hook

Difficulty
Easy

Stitch Guide
BL/FL - back loop/front loop, CH - chain, DC - double crochet, RS - right side, SC - single crochet, SL ST - slip stitch, ST - stitch



Notes
  • Use H hook for Toddler size. Use I hook for Child size. Use J hook for Adult size.
  • “Join with a SC” = Put yarn on hook, insert hook into desired ST, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.
Instructions:

Neck

CH 13.

Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each ST across, CH 1, turn. [12 SC]

Rows 2 - 64: SC in BL of each SC across, CH 1, turn. [12 SC]

After row 64, join the strip end-to-end and SL ST through both layers forming a circle, CH 1.

Now, turn the circle right-side-out (seam on the inside). Mark RS.

Round 65: SC into the end of each row around, join to first SC, fasten off. [64 SC]


Hood

Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn with a SC in FL 26 STS to the left of the back seam, SC in FL of next 11 STS, SC in BOTH loops of next 52 STS (you should be back to the beginning of the round now), SC in BL of next 12 STS (behind the first 12 made), CH 1, turn. [12 FL + 52 + 12 BL = 76 SC] See Pic below.

Row 2: (SC in next, DC in next) across, CH 1, turn. [76 STS]

Repeat Row 2 until the entire height of the hood (INCLUDING the neck portion) measures 12 1/2 - 13” for Toddler Size, 14 - 15” for Child Size, or 16 - 17” for Adult Size.

When your hood has reached the appropriate height, turn the hood inside out (wrong side facing), join the corners end-to-end and SL ST through both sides to sew the top of the hood closed. Fasten off, weave in all ends, and turn it right-side-out again.

Slip hood over head and fold the front back to frame the face.



Other Suggestions...
  • Other yarns that will work well: Caron Simply Soft, Cascade 220, Vickie Howell Sheep(ish), Malabrigo Worsted, Red Heart Soft
  • Try variegated or self-striping yarns for a fun, colorful hood.
  • Work the neck and hood in 2 different colors.
  • Work one round of SC around the face opening with fun fur or other textured yarn.
  • Embellish with a flower, bow, ribbon, brooch, buttons, or scarf pin.
  • Sew the fold in place with a few stitches.
  • Add a small pom pom to the tip of the hood.
