CROCHET PATTERN - Andy Hat

This chunky ski hat can be made with or without earflaps, and is great for boys and girls of all ages!

Materials
US Size M/13 (9.0 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors

Yarn
2 colors of Super Bulky (size 6) yarn, about 50-60 yards each.
Sample shown using Lion Brand Hometown USA.

Sizes
Toddler, Child, and Adult
To fit: 18-19”, 20-21”, 22-23” head circumference

Gauge
4 SC and 5 Rows = 2”

Stitch Guide
CA/CB - Color A/Color B, CH - chain, DC - double crochet, HDC - half double crochet, RS - right side, SC - single crochet, SK - skip, SL ST - slip stitch, ST(S) - stitch(es)

Notes

  1. The CH-1 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a ST. Join each round to the top of the 1st ST made. 
  2. Super bulky yarn can sometimes be stiff. Give your hat a good stretch and a gentle wash to loosen it up for a nice, comfortable fit.

Toddler
With CA, make magic ring.
Round 1:  CH 1, 9 DC in ring, join—9 DC.
Round 2:  CH 1, 2 DC in each DC around, join—18 DC.
Round 3:  CH 1, (1 DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join—27 DC.
Round 4:  CH 1, (1 DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) around, join—36 DC.
Round 5:  CH 1, SC in each DC around, join—36 SC.
Round 6:  CH 1, SK 1st ST, *SC and HDC in next (Group made), SK next; repeat from * around, join to 1st SC, Turn—18 groups.
Round 7:  CH 1, work Group into same ST as join, *SK next, work Group into SC; repeat from * around, join to 1st SC, Turn—18 groups.
Round 8:  CH 1, SC in each ST around, join, do not turn—36 SC.
Rounds 9–11:  Repeat Rounds 6–8, then fasten off.
Continue to Finishing Options.

Child
With CA, make magic ring.
Round 1:  CH 1, 10 DC in ring, join—10 DC.
Round 2:  CH 1, 2 DC in each DC around, join—20 DC.
Round 3:  CH 1, (1 DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join—30 DC.
Round 4:  CH 1, (1 DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) around, join—40 DC.
Round 5:  CH 1, SC in each DC around, join—40 SC.
Round 6:  CH 1, SK 1st ST, *SC and HDC in next (Group made), SK next; repeat from * around, join to 1st SC, Turn—20 groups.
Round 7:  CH 1, work Group into same ST as join, *SK next, work Group into SC; repeat from * around, join to 1st SC, Turn—20 groups.
Round 8:  CH 1, SC in each ST around, join, do not turn—40 SC.
Rounds 9–13:  Repeat Round 6–8, ending on a Round 7 repeat, then fasten off.

Adult
With CA, make magic ring.
Round 1:  CH 1, 11 DC in ring, join—11 DC.
Round 2:  CH 1, 2 DC in each DC around, join—22 DC.
Round 3:  CH 1, (1 DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join—33 DC.
Round 4:  CH 1, (1 DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) around, join—44 DC.
Round 5:  CH 1, SC in each DC around, join—44 SC.
Round 6:  CH 1, SK 1st ST, *SC and HDC in next (Group made), SK next; repeat from * around, join to 1st SC, Turn—22 groups.
Round 7:  CH 1, work Group into same ST as join, *SK next, work Group into SC; repeat from * around, join to 1st SC, Turn—22 groups.
Round 8:  CH 1, SC in each ST around, join, do not turn—44 SC.
Rounds 9–14:  Repeat Rounds 6–8, then fasten off.
*For larger heads, repeat Round 8 as needed.

FINISHING OPTIONS

Beanie: All sizes
Join CB at back seam and SC evenly around, join, fasten off, and weave in all ends.

Earflaps: Toddler (Child, Adult)
Right Earflap
Row 1:
  With RS facing and using CA, count 5 (7, 9) STS to the Left of back seam and join yarn with a SC, SC in next 5 (6, 7) STS—6 (7, 8) SC.
Row 2:  CH 1, turn, SK 1 SC, SC across—5 (6, 7) SC.
Repeat Row 2 until there is one ST remaining. Fasten off.

Left Earflap
Row 1:  
With RS facing and using CA, count 11 (13, 15) STS to the Right of back seam and join yarn with a SC, SC in next 5 (6, 7) STS—6 (7, 8) SC.
Row 2:  CH 1, turn, SK 1 SC, SC across—5 (6, 7) SC.
Repeat Row 2 until there is one ST remaining. Fasten off.

Trim
Join CB at back seam. SC evenly around hat and both earflaps, working (SC, CH 16, SC in 2nd CH from hook and in next 14, SC in same SC again) at the tip of each earflap.

Other Suggestions...
  • Other yarns that will work well: Lion Brand Thick & Quick, Hometown USA, Red Heart Vivid
  • Create braids at tips of earflaps instead.
  • Add a fluffy pom pom to the top of the hat
  • Work every SC row of the pattern in a different color for a fun striped effect.
