CROCHET PATTERN - Amy Cowl

This moebius cowl was designed for a good friend. She  lives in a place that doesn’t get cold often, so I wanted to create something soft and light for her.  This elegant cowl is a quick and easy project.

Materials:  J/10 (6.0 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors

Yarn:  200 yards of light worsted yarn.
Sample shown using Knit Picks “Preciosa” in Tortuga.

Finished Size:  7” wide x 22” long (looped)

Gauge:  8 DC and 4 rows = 2” (If your gauge is bigger, that’s fine!)

Difficulty:  Easy

Stitch Guide:  CH - chain, DC - double crochet, SC - single crochet, SL ST - slip stitch, ST(S) - stitch(es)

Special Stitches
Shell = 5 DC in designated stitch or space
V-ST (v stitch) = (DC, CH 3, DC) in designated stitch

Notes
  1. This cowl is made with a half twist (moebius).  Please make sure to read the first 2 rounds carefully.
  2. To make your scarf longer or shorter, increase or decrease the starting chain in multiples of 5.
  3. A CH-3 at the beginning of a round counts as a DC.

Instructions:

CH 159, loosely.
Careful not to twist starting chain, join to 1st CH to form a ring.
Round 1:  CH 1, SC in same ST, *CH 4, skip next 4 CHS, SC in next CH; repeat from * until you get back to the 1st ST.  DO NOT JOIN HERE.  Flip piece toward you & work next SC on the opposite side of the starting chain. (The SC sts will line up.  SEE PICS.)  Continue the [CH 4, skip next 4 CHS, SC in next CH] around to last 4 STS, CH 4, join to 1st SC with a SL ST — 64 CH-4 spaces.

Round 2:  CH 1, Shell in each CH-4 space all the way around, join with SL ST to the CH-1 — 64 Shells.
* Technically, you are working around the cowl twice per round. You have completed the round when you crochet around both sides of the cowl & return to the starting CH-1.  After Round 2, it will look like you have completed 4 rounds.  At the end, it will look like you have completed 12 rounds.
Round 3:  SL ST in next 3 DC, CH 6 (counts as DC + CH-3), DC in same ST, *V-ST in 3rd DC of next Shell; repeat from * around, join to 3rd CH of beginning CH-6 — 64 V-ST.
Round 4:  SL ST into CH-3 space, CH 3, 4 DC in same space, Shell in CH-3 space of each V-ST around, join — 64 Shells.
Round 5:  SL ST in next 2 DC, CH 6 (counts as DC + CH-3), DC in same ST, V-ST in 3rd DC of each Shell around, join — 64 V-ST.
Round 6:  SL ST into CH-3 space, CH 3, 4 DC in same space, Shell in CH-3 space of each V-ST around, join — 64 Shells.
Fasten off, weave in ends.  Wear scarf single- or double-looped around your neck.  Enjoy!

Happy Crocheting!  :)  Danyel
