CROCHET PATTERN - Vibrant V-Stitch Square





This lovely, openwork afghan square is super quick to stitch, and is a great stash-buster project.  Change colors every 2 rows to create a lovely, colorful afghan.

The instructions are for a 12" square, but you can make ANY size square.  You could even repeat the pattern endlessly to create a large afghan!



Yarn:  2 colors of any Worsted Weight yarn.  Sample shown using Red Heart Sparkle Soft.

Materials:  I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors

Gauge:  8 sts and 3 Rows = 2"

Difficulty:  Easy

Stitch Guide:  A - color A, B - color B, ch - chain, dc - double crochet, sl st - slip stitch, st(s) - stitch(es)

Special Stitch:  V-st (v-stitch) = (dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated stitch or space.

Notes:
  1. A ch-3 at the beginning of a Round counts as a dc.
  2. A ch-4 at the beginning of a Round counts as a dc + ch-1.
  3. Square is made with Right Side facing at all times.
Instructions:

With A, make magic ring.
Round 1:  Ch 4, dc in ring, ch 3, [V-st in ring, ch 3] three times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 4 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.
Round 2:  Sl st into ch-1 space, ch 4, dc in same space, (V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space, *V-st in V-st, (V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space; repeat from * two more times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 12 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.  Fasten off A.
Round 3:  Join B with sl st in any corner ch-3 space, ch 4, (dc, ch 3, V-st) in same space, V-st in next 3 V-sts, *(V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space, V-st in next 3 V-sts; repeat from * two more times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 20 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.
Round 4:  Sl st over to corner ch-3 space, ch 4, (dc, ch 3, V-st) in same space, V-st in next 5 V-sts, *(V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space, V-st in next 5 V-sts; repeat from * two more times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 28 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.  Fasten off B.
Round 5:  Join A with sl st in any corner ch-3 space, ch 4, (dc, ch 3, V-st) in same space, V-st in next 7 V-sts, *(V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space, V-st in next 7 V-sts; repeat from * two more times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 36 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.
Round 6:  Sl st over to corner ch-3 space, ch 4, (dc, ch 3, V-st) in same space, V-st in next 9 V-sts, *(V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space, V-st in next 9 V-sts; repeat from * two more times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 44 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.  Fasten off A.
Round 7:  Join B with sl st in any corner ch-3 space, ch 4, (dc, ch 3, V-st) in same space, V-st in next 11 V-sts, *(V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space, V-st in next 11 V-sts; repeat from * two more times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 52 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.
Round 8:  Sl st over to corner ch-3 space, ch 4, (dc, ch 3, V-st) in same space, V-st in next 13 V-sts, *(V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space, V-st in next 11 V-sts; repeat from * two more times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 60 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.  Fasten off B.
Round 9:  Join A with sl st in any corner ch-3 space, ch 4, (dc, ch 3, V-st) in same space, V-st in next 15 V-sts, *(V-st, ch 3, V-st) in corner ch-3 space, V-st in next 15 V-sts; repeat from * two more times, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4 -- 68 V-sts, 4 ch-3 corners.  Repeat one more time in the same manner, if needed for width.  Otherwise, fasten off A.
Block to 12" square.
