This fluffy puff ball beanie is a fun, easy, and cuddly photography prop.

*This hat is a photography prop ONLY.  The long tail and fluffy pom pom are a choking hazard. Responsible Adult Supervision Required.

Materials:  I/9  (5.5 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors

Yarn:  100 yards Worsted Weight Yarn.
Sample shown using Red Heart Plush Baby Yarn.

Sizes:
  Newborn and 3 Months

Gauge:  7 DC and 4 rounds = 2”

Stitch Guide:  CH - chain, DC - double crochet, HDC - half double crochet, SC - single crochet, SL ST - slip stitch, ST - stitch

Notes
  1.  The pattern is written for Newborn size with 3-Month size in parentheses.
  2.  The CH-2 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch.
  3.  I did not indicate where to add the stripes.  Change colors to create stripes anywhere you like.

Start with magic ring.
Round 1:  CH 2, 11 (12) DC in ring, join to top of first DC (here and throughout).
Round 2:  CH 2, 2 DC in each DC around, join.  [22 (24) DC]
Round 3:  CH 2, (1 DC in next, 2 DC in next) around, join.  [33 (36) DC]
Round 4:  CH 2, (1 DC in next 2, 2 DC in next) around, join.  [44 (48) DC]
Rounds 5 - 9:  CH 2, DC in each DC around, join.  [44 (48) DC]
Round 10:  CH 1, SC (HDC) in each DC around, join and fasten off.  [44 SC (48 HDC)]

Tail and Assembly
Use a double strand of yarn.  Leaving a 6” tail, CH 60 (or more), then fasten off leaving a 6” tail.
Use a pom pom maker, cardboard or your fingers to create a large, fluffy pom pom.
Using needle, thread one end of the tail down through the top-center of the hat and secure it to the inside.  Carefully thread the other end of the tail through the center of the pom pom and tie it in a knot to secure.  Put hat on baby & gently place the pom pom into desired position.

Other Suggestions...
  • Work entire hat in one solid color, or try variegated or self-striping yarns.
  • Make a large tassel instead of a pom pom.
  • Embellish hat with buttons, flowers, bows, clips, appliqués, etc.
