CROCHET PATTERN - School Spirit Jar Cozy

A couple weeks ago, I showed you the yarn I used for the Design Wars "Back to School" Challenge, and here's my design!

The School Spirit Jar Cozy takes a simple glass jar and turns it into a colorful caddy for school supplies or crochet notions! I reused pickle jars and Mason jars to make mine. These cozies work up quickly, have a nice texture, and make a great gift for teachers, students, or office mates!

SIZES: Small (16 oz jar/10" circumference), Medium (24 oz jar/11.5" circumference), and Large (32 oz jar/12" circumference), with instructions for creating a cozy for any size jar.

MATERIALS: I/9 hook, 2-3 colors of WW yarn, yarn needle, scissors, and a 16, 24, or 32 oz jar

YARN: Worsted Weight. Samples shown using Caron Simply Soft Party (3 oz/164 yds), 1/2 skein each.

GAUGE: 3 clusters and 7 rows = 2" in sc3tog pattern stitch

STITCH GUIDE: ch(s) - chain(s), sc - single crochet, sc3tog - single crochet 3 together, hdc - half double crochet, st(s), BLO - back loop only, yo - yarn over

NOTES
  1. The ch-1 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a st.
  2. The last leg of the last cluster of each round is worked into the same space as the first leg of the first cluster. This hides the seam.
  3. I have not indicated color changes. Change to a new color by joining the end of a round with the new color.
  4. I used 16 and 24 oz pickle jars, and a 32 oz mason jar for my containers. Any similar glass jar will suffice.
  5. Notes throughout the pattern will help you customize a cozy for any size jar.

JAR: written as Small (Medium, Large).

Start with Magic Ring.
Round 1:  Ch 1, 10 (12, 14) hdc in ring, join with sl st to top of 1st hdc.  [10 (12, 14) hdc]
Round 2:  Ch 1, 2 hdc in each hdc around, join.  [20 (24, 28) hdc]
Round 3:  Ch 1, (hdc in next, 2 hdc in next) around, join.  [30 (36, 42) hdc]
*Circle should now measure 2.5" (3.0", 3.25"), or same diameter as bottom of jar.
Round 4 (in BLO):  Ch 1, draw up loop in same st as join and in next 2 sts, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook (sc3tog made), ch 1, *sc3tog in same st as last leg of previous cluster and in next 2 sts, ch 1; repeat from * around, join to 1st leg of 1st cluster.  [30 (36, 42) sts]
Round 5:  Ch 1, sc3tog in same st as join and in next 2 sts, ch 1, *sc3tog in same st as last leg of previous cluster and in next 2 sts, ch 1; repeat from * around, join.
Rounds 6 - 18 (20, 23):  Repeat Round 5.
*If using a different size jar, repeat Round 5 until cozy reaches just below threading on neck of jar.
Last Round:  Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, skip ch-1 space, *2 sc in next, skip ch-1 space; repeat from * around, do NOT work 2 sc in same space as join, join to 1st sc.  [28 (34, 40) sc]
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Slide cozy onto empty jar and give it a little twist to shift the clusters diagonally.

Other Suggestions:
  • Other yarns that will work well = I Love This Yarn, Red Heart Soft, Cascade 220, any WW Cotton.
  • To customize your cozy for any jar, make sure base circle measures the same diameter as bottom of jar (the VERY bottom part that actually touches the table).  Work clusters as instructed until cozy reaches neck of jar, then work final sc round to finish.
  • Try alternating solid and variegated yarns for an extra colorful cozy.
  • Decorate your jar cozy with appliqu├ęs, buttons, or embroidery.

CROCHET PATTERN - Tunisian Coffee Cup Cozy

I've been wanting to learn how to do Tunisian Crochet for a long time, and I finally figured it out!
This little coffee cozy is the product of several short rows of the Tunisian Simple Stitch that were joined by a seam and slipped onto my travel cup.
Easy Peasy!

MATERIALS:  I-9 (5.5 mm) Tunisian crochet hook, small amount of worsted weight cotton or wool, yarn needle, scissors.  (If you don't have a Tunisian hook you can still make this project with a regular I hook because the rows are short.)

STITCH GUIDE:  ch - chain, YO - yarn over

NOTES:
1.  You do not turn at the end of a row.  Each row is worked from right to left, and then back again (...or left to right, if you're a lefty.)
2.  Count your stitches EVERY time... it's very easy to miss the last stitch of the row!
3.  The piece will curl up, but when you sew the seam closed, it will work out just fine.

Ch 12, or any number you like.

Row 1 (forward):  Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, YO and pull up loop, * insert hook into next ch, YO and pull up loop; repeat from * across leaving all 12 loops on hook.  Do not turn.
Row 1 (return):  YO and pull through 1st loop, * YO and pull through 2 loops; repeat from * across.  One loop will remain on hook.

*If you'd like to watch a video of this foundation row, CLICK HERE.
Row 2 (forward):  * Insert hook from right to left under next vertical thread, YO and pull up loop; repeat from * across leaving all loops on hook.  Do not turn.
Row 2 (return):  YO and pull through 1st loop, * YO and pull through 2 loops; repeat from * across.
*If you'd like to watch a video of this row, CLICK HERE.
Repeat Row 2 (forward & return) until the piece fits around your travel mug or to-go cup.  Fasten off, leaving a 12" tail for sewing.
Sew first and last rows together.
You can add a round of single crochet to the top and bottom of the cozy if you'd like, but I think it looks just fine without it.
