I hope you enjoy this EASY and FREE crochet pattern! :)
Materials: I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors
Yarn: 2 colors of Worsted Weight Yarn, approximately 75-100 yards each
Sizes: 0-3 Months (14-15”), 3-6 Months (15-17”), 6-12 Months (17-19”), Toddler (18-20”), Child (19-21”), Adult (21-23”)
Gauge: 7 HDC and 4 Rows = 2”
Stitch Guide: BL - back loop, CH - chain, HDC - half double crochet, SC - single crochet, SL ST - slip stitch, ST(S) - stitch(es)
Notes:
- Pattern is written for 0-3 months with 3-6 months, 6-12 months, toddler, child and adult sizes in parentheses.
- Count your STS as you go along to make sure you do the HDC and SC in the correct places.
- Don’t fasten off at each color change. Carry the yarn along loosely.
CH 25 (27, 29, 31, 33, 37), turn.
Row 1: HDC in 2nd CH from hook and in each ST across, CH 15, turn. [24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 36) HDC + 15 CH]
Row 2: Work 2-3 SC in 2nd CH from hook and in next 13 CH (spiral made). Change Color, HDC in BL of each HDC across, CH 1, turn. [24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 36) HDC + spiral]
Row 3: HDC in BL of each HDC across, CH 15, turn. [24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 36) HDC + 15 CH]
Row 4: Work 2-3 SC in 2nd CH from hook and in next 13 CH (spiral made). Change Color, HDC in BL of each HDC across, CH 1, turn. [24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 36) HDC + spiral]
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until 24 (26, 30, 32, 36, 40) rows have been completed, CH 1, turn.
Joining end-to-end, SL ST down entire length of hat through both layers, fasten off leaving a 12” tail. Turn hat right-side-out.
Using tail & yarn needle, weave in and out of the topmost HDC stitches evenly around the top of the hat, then cinch the hat closed so that the spirals form a “bouquet”. Fasten off the long tail. SC evenly around edge of cuff if desired. Weave in all ends. Fold up cuff & Enjoy!
Other Suggestions:
- For wider stripes, change colors every 4 rows instead of 2.
- Work the entire hat in a solid, variegated, or self-striping yarn.
- Work every 2 rows using a different color. Use up your scraps!

ReplyDeleteThis is adorable, but how do you make the curliques on top?
ReplyDeleteThe curliques are made at the same time as the rows of half double crochet.
DeleteLove this pattern. What does work 2-3 sc mean?? I'm lost. Thanks
ReplyDeleteYou will put 2-3 single crochet in each chain. It causes the strip to curl
Delete2-3 sc means (after your chain 15, 2sc in 2nd ch from hook and do 3 single crochet in next chain, repeat down the chain.
ReplyDeletethank you
DeleteIs it 2 sc, then 3sc in the next alternating 2 then 3
DeleteOr is is just 2 in the 2nd ch, then 3sc only in ea to the end?
Very confusing
2sc or 3sc in each ch. 2 will make for a looser curl, 3 will be a tighter curl.
DeleteI consider myself an advanced chrocheter. But I have bombed on this pattern. I'm making the child size hat. For some reason I have curlies both ends. Third attempt might be lucky. It feels like there's a step missing from Pattern or I'm missing the point. Love a pic of first few rows. Thanks
DeleteSo 3rd time was lucky I have worked it out. Lol
DeleteLovely pattern! Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this pattern!!! I've already made 2 for a baby and child and plan to make one more for a toddler. I used Caron Simply Soft Paints and they came out beautifully. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteLast fall I stumbled upon this pattern and made at least 15. This year request for more wont stop coming in. It's such a fun hat. I pair it with the keyhole scarf. Everyone loves them. Thank you
ReplyDeleteI can't get my spirals to be as tight as the picture shows. What am I doing wrong? I put 2 or 3 sc in each chain.
ReplyDeleteGena, you can twist your spirals into shape or try using a smaller hook just for the spirals.
DeleteHave fun!
I love the look of this hat; and, if there were video instruction, I'd do one in a heartbeat. ALAS, I've discovered I just can't read and interpret written pattern instructions. I've had fantastic luck with You Tube video insruction. I don't suppose you have a video hiding somewhere?
ReplyDeleteI'm am the same way. I just csnt read pattern buts videowoild be awesome
DeleteGood post but I was wondering if you could write a litte more on this subject? I’d be very thankful if you could elaborate a little bit further. Appreciate it..! How to crochet the beautiful crochet blanket for babies
ReplyDeleteDid you seriously just hijack this post so people would go to your youtube video? This is for the Delaney Hat. Not your blanket.
DeleteDon’t click on the blanket link....it’s a hijack!!!
DeleteI made one for my granddaughter Christmas 2019 and now I am making several more for an auction for her preschool!! Absolutely LOVE this pattern!!

ReplyDeleteJust finished making my first one of these hats in a variegated yarn from Ice Yarns. I'm so happy with how it turne out! Thank you for such an amazing pattern! Now that I know that I can make it, and that I love it, I will definitely buy the ad-free pdf version. Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this pattern, will be trying it out.
ReplyDeleteYou made such an interesting piece to read, giving every subject enlightenment for us to gain knowledge. Thanks for sharing the such information with us to read this... customized hats cheap
ReplyDeleteThank you for this fun pattern! I have made several of these hats over the years. Right now I am making one for a baby gift, but using the toddler size. I have 30 rows done and it measures 13". The first row is a little narrower than the others so I was thinking of making my last row the same color, I know that would make a fatter looking stripe. son't know if that's a good idea. So the questions are - should I make the last 2 rows the same color as the first, and also if making two more rows (32 as the toddler pattern says) will be a good size? I am confused about the size (Toddler 17"-19") since with two more rows before I close it up it measures about 14". Looking forward to finishing this one, it's so cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat is self-striping?
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern! It is adorable! A customer asked for earflaps on this. Any suggestions on how to add them?
ReplyDeletegreat
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you that I just love making this hat and thank you for the pattern. My absolute favorite.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the pattern. I'm not a new crocheter but i did have some trouble understanding your directions a couple of times but figured it out. Im making a christmas present for my neice here its 12/17 & im almost done after messing up a couple times on the seaming. Your directions for the top was another puzzlement but then i figured you meat to lace thru the top stitches to pull like a drawstring bag and cinch close..to make the ''bouquet of curls''. Im about done but it looks like it may not completely seal the top closed even tho it does cinch in the curls. Does it seal it closed? Will there be a hole or gap? Do i need to sew more to make sure no hole? It is a fun pattern to work and i usually despise bottom up hats..but i really like this pattern.
