I have included instructions for both Child & Adult sizes, and included some notes to customize the fit of your Super Slouch.
SUPPLIES: M/13 (9.0 mm) hook, K/10.5 (6.5 mm) hook, J/10 (6.0 mm) hook and/or I/9 (5.5 mm) hook. You may also want to use a stitch marker.
YARN: I prefer I Love This Yarn or Vanna's Choice for this project, but your favorite sturdy Worsted Weight yarn will be fine.
STITCH GUIDE: HDC = Half Double Crochet, SC = Single Crochet, BPSC = Back Post Single Crochet, ST = Stitch
GAUGE: With K hook, 5 HDC and 5 rounds = 2" [If yours is a little bigger, that's fine.]
[Both sizes] Using M hook, Start with Magic Loop.
Round 1: 10 HDC in loop.
Round 2: 2 HDC in each ST around. [20 HDC]
Round 3: 1 HDC in each ST around. [20 HDC]
Round 4: 2 HDC in each ST around. [40 HDC]
Round 5: 1 HDC in each ST around. [40 HDC]
Round 6: (1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around. [60 HDC]
Rounds 7-8: 1 HDC in each ST around. [60 HDC]
** Switch to K hook.
Rounds 9-16: 1 HDC in each ST around.
[If you would like your ADULT hat to be EXTRA slouchy, add a few more rounds with your K hook here.]
[If you would like your ADULT hat to be EXTRA slouchy, add a few more rounds with your K hook here.]
** If you're making an ADULT hat, switch to J hook now. If you're making a CHILD hat, switch to I hook now.
Round 17: SC in each ST around. [60 SC]Rounds 18-23: BPSC (not too tightly) in each ST around. [Too complicated? Too fancy? Work a snug SC in each ST instead.]
** If you'd like a wider band, add a couple of extra rounds. If not, fasten off and weave in ends.
Enjoy your super slouch. ☺
I love this and so would my daughter! Going to give it a try. Thanks for the free pattern!
ReplyDeleteI live in Portland OR and it's about the time of year when these types of hats go over swimmingly well... thank you so much for offering this for free AND for the permission to sell them, as long as credit is given. I was thinking about whipping up things like these for a local craft show, so I will let you know if it happens... Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSo I am replying to my own comment.. For some reason, I never put this pattern in my favorites or anything on Ravely. Looked up slouchy beanie on there just now and gravitated towards this one thinking I haven't seen it before. I come here to the site and read the comments, and there's one from me I totally do NOT remember posting. I must have had a few cocktails, lol. That being said, I am going to start making this pattern once I get an M hook. The biggest I have is a K, so I'm almost ready. LoL!
Deleteso pretty..thanx for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI just made one of these beanies and it turned out perfectly! perfect slouch, perfect band (altho I did use a smaller needle than recommended). Looks excellent with multicolored yarn, too. Thank you for sharing this easy and fun pattern available for free!
ReplyDeleteAJS
finally someone who is willing to share pattern! thank you so much!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try this!
ReplyDeleteSUPER FANTASTIC! I'm going to try this today! I've been looking for another hat and this one is perfect! Thanks for the pattern! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much... especially for the child size instructions - I have a 6 year old and 9 year old granddaughters who will like one of these.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing as I have been working this type of hat for a few days with a few issues most patterns used an I hook and I found it so small that when I got to the decrease rows they listed it already the right tightness to my head so I was not able to decrease and that hat looked more like a beanie then a slouchy hat..:O) thanks going to try your pattern..
ReplyDeleteAMAZING! I finished my hat. The first of many, I'm sure! I posted pictures on my Facebook page, blog and Ravelry. On my Facebook page and blog, I also posted a link to your pattern. :) Thank you SO much for a great pattern!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THE HAT PATTERN. Thank you for sharing. I would like to read the rest of your BLOG but I cant read light text with a black background. I like where you have highlighted text IN RED as that is much easier for me to read. I love to find a nice new crochet blog as there are so few really good ones as compared to knitting.
ReplyDeletehi just wondering how much yarn to buy for this...i'm not familiar with vanna's choice do i need one ball or two?
ReplyDeleteHookiemama, my blog isn't black, it sometimes just takes a minute to load.
ReplyDeleteYou will need 1 ball of Vanna's choice, unless you plan to make it SUPER slouchy, then you may want to grab a 2nd.
Thank you so much for posting the pattern. I made it in a matter of hours and it turned out great! Much appreciated! I did add a few rows for more slouch and a couple of extra rows for the band.
ReplyDeletewow so cute im makeing right now its so easy this is going to be the first thing i made for e in a long time im 13 and i make a lot of things for friends and family.
ReplyDeleteHow coincidental. I have been searching for this type of beanie and I finally found a pattern I love and it comes from the town I live in.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to make this!!
ReplyDeleteJust fell in love with this pattern and how fast it whipped up. Nice addition to my daughter's christmas present and to top it off, a great hat for long hair. Will do up some more and maybe try one in a cotton for Spring/Summer for those bad hair days.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this pattern, my daughter is wanting one of these hats. I am new to crocheting and see that you have an M hook listed at 9, but I am only finding N hooks at 9. I am assuming I go by the 9 mm and not the letter? I am new to the crochet world :)
ReplyDeleteYes, go by the mm measure because that doesn't change. Different hook mfgs have different standards on what it a J hook and what is a K hook, but the mm measurement is metric, and therefore does not change.
DeleteThanks for the pattern. I was able to make it in 2 days. Love it. I didn't even tell my daughter it was for her, she saw it in the morning, put it on and claimed it hers! First hat she likes:) She wore it to school and now some of the girls want the hat...looks like I will be Hatting it for awhile! Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteI know someone that made one of these and it looked amazing
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this pattern!!!! Can't wait to actually make something for myself!!! lol.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for sharing this pattern, I can't stop making them!! http://craftybatches.blogspot.com/2012/02/quick-and-easy-weekend-hat.html
ReplyDeleteI'm making these for charity. Do you have any other patterns you've made?
ReplyDeleteI have several free patterns here on my blog... and I sell over 30 more on my website www.crazysockscrochet.com
DeleteI made this using navy wool and it looks really good. Very easy to follow pattern. Thanks so much for sharing
ReplyDeleteJo :)
I'm currently making a second hat. Fast and easy and very stylish. I used self-striping yarn and they're gorgeous. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
ReplyDeleteHi, Saved this to work on, really nice hat and thanks so much for sharing it with everyone. I feel it is one of the nicest ones I have seen so far!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!
DeleteGreat pattern!, Only took me a few hours and my Daughter thinks it's wonderful!. Making one for my second Daughter tomorrow :)
ReplyDeleteDo you have a pdf or some printable version? I would love to be able to print it and take with me. I tried to highlight and print but it keeps coming up with a black background.
ReplyDeleteThanks
I figured it out! lol! Thank you so much for being so generous with this pattern. I have requests make four. Two for my 28 yr old daughter and her two friends.
ReplyDeleteI love this hat
ReplyDeleteGreat sight. Can't wait to try this. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this pattern! It was so easy to make and now my friends want me to make one for them. Thank you also for allowing us to sell.
ReplyDeletewould it be okay to whip up some of these to sell either at craft fairs or on my etsy shop?
ReplyDeletejust noticed that at the end of the pattern that its okay to sell these! thanks! lol
DeleteThank you for the free pattern. I just made this with a rainbow color yarn from Paton (Canadiana). Worked up in about an hour & a half. Looks very nice. Thanks again for the free pattern.
ReplyDeleteThis is the best slouch hat I've seen. Do you have any tips to make this infant size??
ReplyDeleteI've never made one that small, but if you reduce the number of rounds, and work the final band part using a G hook, it might fit an infant or toddler.
DeleteWhat a great, easy hat! A quick project I completed in a couple of hours. It was pretty small though. It doesn't fit me, but my 8 year old daughter loves it. It fits her perfectly. I didn't even switch to the J hook at the end. Next time I think I'll have to increase the stitches. Thanks again! And yes, this looks great with multi-colored yarn too!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this hat...and MUST make one for my daughter...
ReplyDeletewould one ball (3 or 3 1/2 ounces of vanna yarn be enough for an adult sized hat....
should i buy 2 to play it safe (dye lot)
i saw your comment above about buying 2 if you want extra slouch...
I like the hat exactly as shown..no extra slouch.
thanks for sharing this great pattern!
One skein of VC is plenty.
Deletethank you!
DeleteI just picked it up tonight at michael's..and cant wait to get started on the hat!
Love the hat...very easy pattern to follow....i plan to make several....thank you for the free pattern
ReplyDeleteHow do you make the Magic Loop mentioned at the beginning of this pattern? Don't see instructions for this.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
I have a question. I made this hat following your tutorial but it won't slouch the way it should. I made it longer to slouch more and it just seems stiff. I can't figure out if it's because I crochet it too tight or what?
ReplyDeleteSorry I didn't respond sooner. It sounds like you crochet tighter than I do. Try using a bigger hook... and maybe a softer yarn. Red Heart wouldn't work well for this.
DeleteRed Heart Soft works great on this hat and it's beautiful!
DeleteThis a great pattern for people who like hats in the winter but don't have the deeply cold temps. You've solved my problem there. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Just made one tonight. Thanks
ReplyDeleteIn Boye hooks, 9mm is a size N, not M.
ReplyDeleteI don't use Boye. ;)
DeleteI love this pattern! I linked to it on my blog this morning for a hat roundup: http://www.mooglyblog.com/one-skein-crochet-hats-for-women-10-free-patterns-to-make-and-wear/
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing it!
I love this pattern,I just started teaching my 21yr old daughter to crochet, this looks like it would b a good one for her, But what is the magic loop, lol G-ma tought me but thats a new one,lol
ReplyDeleteGoogle it. It's a great trick to learn!
DeleteWhen making the magic ring, does the loop on the hook count as one of the hdc stitches. Everytime I count my stitches I have 21 hdc on rows two and three.
ReplyDeleteI am new to crocheting. HELP!
No, the loop on the hook doesn't count.
DeleteJust made one of these for my niece, only now I want to keep it. LOVE it!!! : ) Will be making another one ASAP! Thanks so much for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteI'm new to crocheting and am not familiar with the magic loop. Will you please explain how to make? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI just made this hat and it only took about 3 hours, and it was so easy but lovely. I used 2 colors, and instead of a magic loop I instead chained 2 and sl it.
ReplyDeleteMy granddaughter ask me to make her a slouch hat. I searched and found this one. She loved the look. So here I go. I will repost on the results. Thanks for the free pattern.
ReplyDeleteI just found this pattern.. link was on Crochet Happy blog (http://asktracyann.crochethappy.com/2013/01/girl-hats-for-handmade-love-thursday.html). I need a new hat.. so think I am going to make one for myself.. will be putting this on my blog and Facebook too.. smile.. who knows.. I might end up selling it.

I absolutely love this pattern and have now made 8 of these hats. The band, however, is uneven on the bottom when I've finished as the last stitch of the last row sits higher and doesn't evenly match. Not sure I'm making myself clear........ I always mark the first stitch of each round I start. Do you have any answers? Wish I could send a picture!
ReplyDeleteMaybe wear it so the uneven part is at the back and doesn't show? :-)
DeleteI love your pattern.. and even am talking about it in my blog... scheduled for Monday, 2/4/13.. I plan on making one for myself.. and offering it for sale.. smile.. thanks for a great design..

Love the pattern - made a "test" hat with varigate yarn - now my daughter wants one with stripes. I can't get the stripes to match - any suggestions?

DeleteLove this pattern. I'm totally "hooked" on slouchy hats now.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern. I love slouch hats. I am learning how to crochet and hope to attempt this next week. :-)
ReplyDeleteawesome pattern, thanks! i have dreads so its perfect for tucking them away when i want to. i used slightly smaller hook but still turned out great :)
ReplyDeleteHello Danyel! thank you so much for this amazing pattern. I have searched and made many different slouchie hats and i have to say this is the BEST BY FAR!! I love that you do not have to do the headband separate from the body of the hat. i have made one and I am now making a second. My friend loved it so much we are leaving shortly to purchase some new yarns for this project. i have posted your link on google+, pinterest and facebook!! Please continue left handed crocheters a reason to keep on crocheting!!
