KNITTING PATTERN - Adorable Mini Elf Hat

This is my first attempt at writing a knitting pattern.  This cute little hat is easy to knit & works up fairly quickly.  I used a self-striping yarn, but you can use any worsted weight yarn you like.

Materials:  Worsted weight yarn, Size 8 DPNs (or 9" circulars if you have them), yarn needle, G or H crochet hook, scissors

Size:  Newborn (14" head circumference)

Stitch Guide:  CO - cast on, K - knit, K2TOG - knit 2 together (decrease)

CO 50.  Place marker to mark beginning of round.
Rounds 1-18:  Knit all rounds.
Round 19:  (k8, k2tog) 5 times.  [45 sts]
Round 20-21:  knit
Round 22:  (k7, k2tog) 5 times.  [40 sts]
Round 23-24:  knit
Round 25:  (k6, k2tog) 5 times.  [35 sts]
Round 26-27:  knit
Round 28:  (k5, k2tog) 5 times.  [30 sts]
Round 29-30:  knit
Round 31:  (k4, k2tog) 5 times.  [25 sts]
Round 32-33:  knit
Round 34:  (k3, k2tog) 5 times.  [20 sts]
Round 35-36:  knit
Round 37:  (k2, k2tog) 5 times.  [15 sts]
Round 38-39:  knit
Round 40:  (k1, k2tog) 5 times. [10 sts]
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew top of hat closed.
Add a braid, cord, twist, pom pom, or whatever else you want to the top of the hat.

Stockinette stitch will make the edge of the hat curl, so if you don't want it like that, I recommend crocheting one or two rounds of SC around the edge.

If you want the hat to be longer & more floppy like a stocking cap, work additional rounds in between decrease rounds.
