CROCHET PATTERN - Ponytail Beanie

If you love beanies, but can't wear them because you have a huge ponytail... your problems are solved!

This pattern works up quickly and is very easy!

MATERIALS:  I/9 or J/10 hook, WW yarn, scissors, yarn needle
(Pink hat shown is made with Red Heart With Love.)

GAUGE:  8 DC and 4 rows = 2" with I hook.

STITCH GUIDE:  SC - single crochet, DC - double crochet, HDC - half double crochet, ST - stitch, SL ST - slip stitch

NOTES:  The Ch-2 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch.  SL ST to the 1st stitch of each round instead.  The hair hole is placed at the back-center of the head.  Easily move it up or down by making the hole in a different round.

Use the I hook for Child size.  Use the J hook for Adult size.

Start with Magic Ring or ch 4/join.

Round 1: CH 2, work 12 DC in loop, join.  [12 DC]

Round 2: CH 2, 2 DC in each DC around, join.  [24 DC]

Round 3: CH 2, (1 DC in next ST, 2 DC in next ST) around, join.  [36 DC]

Round 4: CH 2, (1 DC in next 2 STS, 2 DC in next ST) around, join.  [48 DC]

Round 5: CH 2, (1 DC in next 3 STS, 2 DC in next ST) around, join.  [60 DC]

Round 6:  CH 2, DC in each DC around, join.  [60 DC]

Round 7: CH 2, DC in next ST, CH 5, skip next 5 STS, DC in each ST around, join.

Round 8: CH 2, DC in next ST, 5 HDC into CH-5 space, DC in each remaining ST around, join.

Round 9: CH 2, DC in each ST around, join.  [60 DC]

Repeat Round 9 four more times for Child hat, or 5 more times for Adult hat.  Add additional rounds as needed for length. Fasten off & weave in all ends.

OPTIONAL IDEAS:  Work 1 round of SC at end of hat.  Create a shell border.  Put a pom pom on top.  Add a bow or flower.  Make a striped hat.

  1. I am excited about this hat, my granddaughter loves hats, however she wants to have her pony tail shown at all times. Thanks so much

  2. First of all these are adorable then you go and make them for the babies. So cute I can hardly stand it. I have absolutely no idea how to crochet and to be honest I'm not sure I would have the patience for it. The "pattern" looks very confusing. Do you have any links for people who make and sell these?

    1. I'm sorry I didn't reply to this sooner, but if you (or anyone else) would like to request a custom item, feel free to contact me any time.

    2. I wear baseball caps this wayl

  3. Question...I'm having a difficult time with "the Ch 2 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as the first stitch" I think I understand that after your 12 DC in round 1 you join, Ch 2 and slip stich into the 1st ST, but I'm confused how to join after round 2. Help please!

  4. I'm making these for my shop because it seems all my sons friends who are girls have pony tails, as well as some of their moms. Many jog or workout outside and want hats like these...thanks so much for the pattern

  5. Thanks much for this... tis the season again. Now only if we could stop static-y hair! :)

  6. Just made one of these about a week ago and I've worn it multiple's great! I've wanted something like this forever; headbands always pop off my head and hats mush the ponytail, making a weird lump. Genius!!! Thanks so much for the pattern!

  7. Does anybody else think this hat is very large? I have a decent size head and it is so big on me. What have I done wrong? Help!

    1. You haven't done anything "wrong"... I probably just crochet more tightly than you do. Use a smaller hook & see how that works out for you. :)

    2. Thanks!

  8. Love this Beanie pattern! Thank you for sharing. I can’t tell you how many times I start a pattern and then it makes no sense. Your tutorial is easy to follow, I will try this!

  9. What yarn was used for the hat in that has variegated colors?

  10. Can I use smaller needle for cotton and use pattern
