Day 19 - Master Bedroom Closet

My closet wasn't TOO bad.  I am guilty of holding on to clothes I *might* wear again someday, so I tried on a lot of the shirts.  If they didn't even come close to fitting, I put them in the donate box.  Except for these 2 really cute pair of size 10 jeans.  I'm dieting/exercising, so hopefully they'll fit me again someday soon!  ANYWAY... here are the "before" photos... the left & the middle of the closet.  (Hubby's stuff is on the right, and I didn't clean his side.)

I organized my sweaters & stacked them on the shelf, folded all of my pants, hung up all my shirts & lined them up by style/thickness.  I put all of the purses on the top shelf & got rid of all of the extra junk.  I filled up a pretty big box to take to Goodwill.  The whole closet (well, my side anyway) took about an hour.  Here are the "after" photos...

I'm not giving you the pattern for the base hat, but I do recommend using a SC pattern.  I highly recommend my "Pat Hat" Pattern, but you're free to use any pattern you like.

OK, so once you've made your SC base hat (ear flaps are optional), you'll need to mark the center of the hat where you'll attach the mohawk.  I just smash the hat flat & then thread a needle/yarn along the ridge.

Next, prepare your mohawk "hairs".  I've found that 4" hairs are just about perfect.  So I wrap the short side of a business card & then cut along the bottom to get a bunch of nice even hairs all at once.  You'll have to do this several times.

Now you're ready to start attaching the hairs to the hat.  I use a latch hook tool (got it for about $2 at Hobby Lobby).  If you don't have a latch hook tool, you can do it with a crochet hook.  I hold 2 pieces of yarn at a time & loop them between the SC stitches.  There's really no exact method to this part.  Just follow your center string & make the "rows" of hairs 3-4 stitches wide... or wider if you want.  It takes a little creativity near the top-center, but you really can't mess it up.  Pull the center string out as you go.

It's time consuming, but pretty simple.  And it looks AWESOME! :)  Enjoy!

Day 17 - Mail & Paperwork Station

We don't really have a place where we stash our mail.  We usually throw out the junk, pay the bills right away, and take the magazines to the bathroom.  However, we ALWAYS seem to accumulate paperwork, crochet invoices, school projects, and other random stuff right on the kitchen table.  The kitchen & the living room are connected in our house, so that's where we do most of our "business" (like this blog, for example).  This is our kitchen table "before"... and it's been like this since before Christmas!! :(

I need to stop stashing yarn everywhere.  I cleaned up the craft area in my bedroom back on "day 10", so I put away as much of the yarn as I could.  I bought a standing file holder thing & 5 colored folders (1 for each member of the family, plus one for bills/coupons/whatever).  I threw away trash, put everyone's paperwork into their own folders, and wiped everything clean.  Four people can sit & eat at our kitchen table again without having to shove piles of yarn & school work out of the way. And the napkins & fruit bowl have come home... Here's the "after" photo...

Day 15 (part 2) - Vitamin Storage

As you saw, we keep our medicines in the bathroom.  We keep our vitamins in the kitchen so that they're handy everyday.  I don't have a "before" photo, but I just wanted to show you how I organized our little vitamin collection.  "His" vitamins are in the left bin.  "Her" vitamins & the kids' Flintstones vitamins are in the right bin.  These bins also help me b/c I'm a shorty... so instead of getting on a chair to dig through the vitamin bottles on the top shelf, I can just take my bin down.  Nice.

Day 13, 14, 15 - Medicine Cabinet & Under the Bathroom Sink

*Warning:  I'm a lady... and the bathroom sink is where I store my "lady stuff"... if that's TMI, please don't continue reading this blog entry.*

On Bowl Full of Lemons' blog, day 13 was "Medicine Cabinet", but we don't have one.  Day 14 was "Under the Bathroom Sink" and Day 15 was "Medicine Storage"... so I pretty much combined all 3 of these entries together.  I did need to organize under my sink BADLY, and I desperately needed to go through all of the medicines too.  It took me a long time to finish today's challenge & you'll see why... Here is the "before" photo from under MY side of the bathroom sink...

As you can see, I pretty much just throw stuff down there.  It was not organized at all.  Everything down there was sticky & NOTHING was full.  Every box & bottle was half empty.  There were 3 half-full boxes of tampons.  There's a drawer next to this cabinet that you can't see (forgot to take a photo of it) that was where we kept all of the medicine & the razors.  That's a safety hazard if I've ever heard of one!  I had makeup in 6 different locations.  I threw out all old makeup, all expired medicine, and anything that was just plain nasty.  I used the clear drawers & shoeboxes to organize everything.  I put the medicines & razors in a much safer location & that drawer is now the home for my curling irons & extra brushes.  And I must admit... I never thought I'd ever find myself organizing my tampons!  LOL!!!  Here's the awesome "after" photo...

Day 12 - Spice Cabinet

My spice cabinet is tiny, and honestly, it's not one we use very often.  I cleaned it out real well a few months ago b/c some honey leaked & the ants got in there.  The top shelf is for tea bags, sprinkles & cupcake papers (the rest of the baking stuff is in a bin in the pantry).  The middle shelf is for oils & sprays.  The bottom shelf is for all of the spices, bouillon cubes, extracts, etc.  The spices we use the most are up front & the ones we don't are in the back (Duh.)  I don't have anything witty to say about today's project, sorry!  Someday when I have a nice big kitchen, I'd like to get one of those spice "steps" so all the spices can be on display.  I forgot to take a "before" photo, but it wasn't much different than the "after" shot.  Thanks for stopping by anyway! :)

Day 11 - Freezer

Cleaning out the freezer is not one of my favorite things to do.  I have to wear rubber gloves b/c that icy feeling makes me cringe & I get angry.  Scraping ice/frost off the windshield of my car makes my blood boil!  I can't explain it.  Anyway, this was a quick task for me b/c we have a small freezer, and there wasn't much food in there.  Here's the "before" shot...

I threw away a couple of things that were clearly freezer burned or were expired.  But I really only had to move some stuff around so that everything was easier to see.  I put the kid-friendly stuff (ouchie pouchies, popsicles) in the door.  I also moved that middle shelf down.  We haven't purchased ANY frozen pizzas since we lived here b/c we didn't think they'd fit in the freezer.  I knew that the top shelf could be moved, but that bottom bin is always so full of stuff that I didn't see that you could put that shelf down there.  When did I get so stupid!?!?  Anyway, I'm off ... here's the "after" shot...

Day 10 - Laundry Closet

OMG, what a mess!  I cannot even begin to describe how disgusting this little closet was.  I've been hoping this challenge would come up, and it feels GREAT to be done with it.  Our laundry closet is a "catch-all" for all kinds of stuff & there was NO organization going on in there.  Here's what it looked like "Before"...

See all those plastic bags? I boxed them up to be shipped to a lady who crochets them into reusable shopping bags.  See that box on the top right?  That was full of "junk drawer" stuff from our OLD house... we moved into this house a year and a half ago.  See the shelf full of cloth diapers?  I haven't used them in at least a year.  Time to sell them!  See the pile of mismatched socks on top of the dryer?  Most of the "mates" were in a pile in my bedroom from when I cleaned off my dresser.  LOL!  SO... after putting away all the various piles of stuff where they belonged (tool box, bedrooms, closets, GARBAGE, etc.) I dusted & cleaned off everything in there, labeled a few bins... stood back & smiled. :)  I have been throwing SO much stuff away... When this 21-day challenge is over, my garbage man might want to strangle me...

We keep our kids' art supplies in this closet too.  They're only allowed to color/paint under supervision, so that's what the big pad of paper & bin full of coloring books is all about... I'm sure you were dying to know.

Day 9 - Craft Area

Today's challenge was supposed to be "toys"... but I have 2 kids with 2 messy rooms, so I'd definitely need more than 1 afternoon to tackle that job.  Plus, I'd really like to buy some containers for all of the legos, action figures, etc.  SO, as suggested I did MY area instead.  My yarn/crafts are kinda like my toys anyway, right?  So here's the "before" photo...

As you can see, the yarn in the bins is pretty well organized.  The pile of laundry on my glider & the random piles of crap on the tops of the yarn bins have been there for MONTHS.  I sorted through all of the papers and the photographs & organized them (or tossed some).  I put the stray yarn balls into their correct drawers.  I folded & put away ALL of the laundry... some will go to Goodwill b/c it was sitting there so long, it doesn't fit the kids anymore.  D'oh!  I threw away that ripped pillow.  Why was I keeping that?!?  And here's the "after" photo....

That box over by the window is the sewing machine I got for my birthday (August)... I don't really have anywhere to put it, so I'm keeping it safely in the box until I get the proper craft room I deserve.

Day 8 - Coat Closet

Our coat closet is tiny, so there wasn't much stuff in there anyway.  Unfortunately, it's also the place where I have to store my vacuum.  Here's the "before" photo...

See that purple bowl?  Yeah, that was the bowl that we used to hand out Halloween candy.  The bowl was empty, but it still had lots of little crumbs in it.  GROSS!  I reorganized the poster tubes (I used to be a teacher, so I have lots of times table posters and stuff like that randomly stashed around the house) and lined up the wrapping paper rolls.  "His" coats are on the left.  "Her" coats are on the right.  I also put all of the hats in a bag on the top shelf.  Here's the "after" photo...

Day 7 - Pantry

I cleaned out my pantry a few weeks ago (right after Christmas), but was amazed at how much stuff collected in there again.  There were only 1-2 things in there that were "expired", but there were quite a few boxes of food that I needed to consolidate into bins or bags.  Here's the "before" photo...

I had to make room for the baggies & wraps that I relocated from under the kitchen sink.  It's a pretty big pantry, but we have a lot of stuff!  I went to the dollar store & bought some bins to help organize the snacks, baking supplies, drink mixes, etc.  Other than that, I just organized the shelves into sections & lined everything up so I could see/reach it more easily.  Hopefully this will help make meal-planning easier.  Here's the "after" photo...

And just for fun... here's a photo of my husband's coffee bean collection.  LOL

CROCHET PATTERN - Ponytail Beanie

If you love beanies, but can't wear them because you have a huge ponytail... your problems are solved!  

This pattern works up quickly and is very easy!

MATERIALS:  I/9 or J/10 hook, WW yarn, scissors, yarn needle
(Pink hat shown is made with Red Heart With Love.)

GAUGE:  8 DC and 4 rows = 2" with I hook.

STITCH GUIDE:  SC - single crochet, DC - double crochet, HDC - half double crochet, ST - stitch, SL ST - slip stitch

NOTES:  The Ch-2 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch.  SL ST to the 1st stitch of each round instead.  The hair hole is placed at the back-center of the head.  Easily move it up or down by making the hole in a different round.

Use the I hook for Child size.  Use the J hook for Adult size.

Start with Magic Ring or ch 4/join.

Round 1: CH 2, work 12 DC in loop, join.  [12 DC]

Round 2: CH 2, 2 DC in each DC around, join.  [24 DC]

Round 3: CH 2, (1 DC in next ST, 2 DC in next ST) around, join.  [36 DC]

Round 4: CH 2, (1 DC in next 2 STS, 2 DC in next ST) around, join.  [48 DC]

Round 5: CH 2, (1 DC in next 3 STS, 2 DC in next ST) around, join.  [60 DC]

Round 6:  CH 2, DC in each DC around, join.  [60 DC]

Round 7: CH 2, DC in next ST, CH 5, skip next 5 STS, DC in each ST around, join.

Round 8: CH 2, DC in next ST, 5 HDC into CH-5 space, DC in each remaining ST around, join.

Round 9: CH 2, DC in each ST around, join.  [60 DC]

Repeat Round 9 four more times for Child hat, or 5 more times for Adult hat.  Add additional rounds as needed for length. Fasten off & weave in all ends.

OPTIONAL IDEAS:  Work 1 round of SC at end of hat.  Create a shell border.  Put a pom pom on top.  Add a bow or flower.  Make a striped hat.

Day 6 - Dresser Drawers

This task was pretty easy.  I don't always keep up with the laundry, but my dresser drawers are usually pretty well organized... with the exception of my sock/underwear drawer.  I usually have to SHOVE stuff into that one.  The biggest mess was on TOP of the dresser.  It was just crap I never bothered to put away.  Here's the "before" photo...  (I couldn't open all 5 drawers, or the dresser tips over.)

I folded & lined up my socks.  I have socks for every season/holiday... except for Thanksgiving.  I threw out all socks that were stretched out or stained.  I got rid of about 10 t-shirts.  I just don't think it's appropriate for a 30-year-old mother to wear a "Publik skool rilly workd fer me" shirt anymore.  I also got rid of all shirts that were size medium.  If/when I'm ever a medium again, I'll buy new ones.  I threw out ALL of my granny panties... I know that's probably TMI, but I decided I'm only going to buy cute underwear from now on.  Not skanky ones, but mildly conservative, colorful ones.  You know, the ones you're NOT embarrassed for your husband to see.  Oops, got off topic there for a minute.  I'll shut up now.  Here's the "after" photo...

Day 5 - Under the Kitchen Sink

I was really hoping this challenge would be coming up soon.  My sink cabinet was a MESS.  There was a trail of dead ants under there from... who knows when.  (We have a BAD ant problem in this house.)  The host of this challenge recommends putting down shelf liner and hanging door organizers, but I don't have any... and this is a rental. I'm not putting any extra money into this crap hole.  Anyway, here's the "before"...

I took everything out, scrubbed down the bottom & sides of the cabinet.  Then I got rid of a couple bottles of cleaner that I never use, organized all of the bottles of hand soap (I'm addicted to yummy soaps!), and lined up all the cleaners so I can find them more easily.  I also removed the boxes of baggies, wax paper, and other stuff that we'd use near food... I don't know why I thought it would be a good idea to store that stuff near the poisons anyway.  *smacks forehead*  After a good 30 minutes, there's still a lot of stuff down there, but it's MUCH neater.  Here's the "after" shot...

Day 4 - Linen Closet

I was dreading this challenge, but I'm glad it's over.  As it turns out, I'm a towel hoarder.  I guess I pretend we're going to have a house full of guests that are all going to need a towel at exactly the same time... but what are the chances of THAT happening?  Here's the "before" shot...

I had several sets of full-size and king-size sheets... we don't have a bed in this house in either of those sizes.  I also had a small stack of baby towels & washcloths... but my "baby" is 2, so I don't need those anymore either.  I got rid of all of the towels and washrags that don't match the colors in either of our bathrooms.  I organized all of the kitchen towels by season (my MIL and GIL love to send us holiday hand towels regularly, and I like them)... but I did get rid of all the towels that were ripped or stained.  My hubby said he'd use some of the towels in the garage, but the rest are going to Goodwill.  Forty-five minutes later, here's the "after" photo...

Day 3 - Tupperware Cabinet

A few days ago, my husband said, "WTF are there so many tupperware bowls down here?  We don't eat leftovers!  I'm throwing away this broken blender!"  Well, he did throw away the broken blender, but we just continued to ignore the heap of tupperware bowls.  I'm glad this challenge came up.  And I think my husband will be pleased, too! :)  Here's the "before" photo...

I tossed about 10 bowls (mostly old butter tubs that we never used), and about 20 lids.  What happened to the matching bowls?  I have no idea.  And I really couldn't care less.  Here's the "after" photo.  :)

Day 2 - Desk

OMG.  My desk was a MESS.  I hoard office supplies, so I had to force myself to get rid of pens & other crap that was just collecting dust.  Why did I think I needed to keep a box of business cards that had NONE of the correct information on them?  Why were there 3 staplers and 2 broken calculators sitting around?  And WHY were there 2 empty "2009" Christmas ornaments stashed under the pencil organizer? I don't know.  Here's the "before" shot.  Ugh.

And (almost 2 hours later) here's the "after" shot.  Much better.  I hope future challenges will help me get the rest of my bedroom/office/craft area cleaned up.  Note to self:  Throw more shit away!
